Happy Vintage Kitchen

I've been very busy this weekend. I've been painting, unpacking, and moving things around like a mad woman. I've been asked by a few people for pics of the new house and the closest room to completion is the kitchen so here you go.....

Open Shelves

The kitchen in our new house is going to have open shelves. I've been thinking a lot about how to make this feature work in our new house. I have come to a few conclusions. A. Thank God we have a big pantry to hide things in. and B. This could look really beautiful. There are just a few rules that I think we should think about.

1. Hide all of the ugly pieces.
2. Try to keep consistent with color.
3. Don't clutter.
4. High contrast or all one color always works.

Here are some inspiration pics.

Carrara Marble....

Makes my heart flutter.........

I love how this marble is so timeless and chic.  Look at how many ways it can be used and it blends so well with so many styles. I really love the Herringbone pattern.....it's subtle but makes such a big statement. Just lovely.....

Design Dilemma - Kitchen

White Appliances + Outdated Cabinets + Limited Funds  =  ??????

My sister called me last night with this design dilemma and I'm sure that some of you have the same problems. Here is a picture of her kitchen:

Paint + Backsplash + Countertops + Color + DIY = Happy Kitchen

I think the best way to tackle this one is to embrace the white. Paint all of the cabinets white and diminish the look of the appliances. Then add a nice paint color like a spa blue or a fresh green to the walls then add a backsplash in either white subway tiles or glass tiles with a hint of color. My sister is getting new countertops so my advice on this one would be to try to get one that contrasts with the white. Another easy fix that doesn't cost too much is to get a new light fixture, maybe a pendant from ikea and a roman shade for above the window. Lastly add some knobs and handles in the same finish as your faucet. This will add some shine and bling (just like jewelry). Here are a few pics for inspiration.

If you think all of that white will wash out the space try painting the island a different color or even the inside of the cabinets. The cabinets might also look nice painted in a gray color, that is a really big trend this year.

You could also make a statement with the backsplash like this ikea kitchen. A fun option that cost's less than wallpaper and is easier to clean is contact paper for the backsplash. Just make sure that you pick an updated print and cut it carefully or it will look sloppy.

I'll let you know what she deciedes. :)
